| Tuesday, July 20 2010 - Lalonde Electrifies Hometown Crowd At World Juniors |
Genevieve Lalonde gave her hometown fans something to cheer about in the first full day of competition at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick. Lalonde in the first race of the day electrified the hometown crowd with a Canadian Junior Record performance in the qualifying rounds of the women's steeplechase. Finishing second in her heat after leading for most of the race, Lalonde sliced over 10 seconds off Danelle Woods, Canadian Junior Record with her clocking of 10 minutes 3.88 seconds, which easily moved her onto Thursday's final. Lalonde will enter the final ranked fourth behind a pair of Ethiopians and a Kenyan athlete. Lalonde's performance also moved her past Speed River teammate Lydia Willemse into second on the all-time list for Canada and gives the 19 year old the A standard for this fall's Commonwealth Games in India.
In other action involving Speed River athletes Tuesday night, Andrew Nixon was 13th in the men's 10,000 metres. Nixon, making his debut on the Canadian National team, clocked a time 30 minutes 35.43 seconds, just shy of his personal best of 30 minutes 26 seconds. |
